“If a person is intelligent and an idealist, then she will be a good teacher. And if a man is intelligent and selfish, then he can go to any extent to get money. In the end, it is a personal choice about how closely we follow our own principles.”

#qotd :- What is the pillar of a relationship?
This is a social novel which reflects upon the position of an Indian girl in a family. Mridula, one of the protagonists of the novel, is a bright and intelligent woman since her childhood and very affectionate and enthusiastic in nature. The author has portrayed Mridula differently from others. “She had enormous enthusiasm for life and unlimited energy for reading, cooking and sketching. She wanted to spend every minute of the day fruitfully. It seemed that the sun rose for her and the rainbow colours were meant only for her. Every day was to be lived to its fullest and every beautiful minute to be enjoyed.”
She meets Sanjay, a talented but impoverished doctor, at her friend’s wedding ceremony in a filmy way. Life ties them in a ribbon after several incidents and then their struggle has been started. Mridula is such an ideal wife that a guy wants in his struggle period and Sanjay feels lucky enough to have her as a life partner. Time flies and Sanjay starts to earn more money from his private practice than his earning in a government hospital. Money doesn’t come alone whenever it comes, it carries power, influence, confidence and ego with it. The same Sanjay thinks that Mridula is very much idealistic and impractical and starts to hide several things from Mridula. When Mridula comes across the brutal reality, she thinks her world has become a house of cards. Their only son, Shishir, follows his dad too. Now, what is the consequence of these incidents? When the foundation of trust cracks, can a marriage remain the same?
This intricately woven novel explores human relationships in telling detail and holds up a mirror to our society with candour and conviction. I don’t give any kind of blame to Sanjay for his behavior with outsiders who make life difficult for Sanjay once upon a time in spite of his sincerity and dedication to his work, but I really starts to hate him since he starts to deceive Mridula.
I am a big fan of Sudha Murthy’s books due to her writing style, choice of words, character portrayal and the story telling technique. I picked up this book with great expectations and I really enjoyed the fiction.
